RWP at malaysian student leaders summit
July 31, 2008
Video will be screened at the 2 day Summit. 1200 Pay It Forward Bookmarks will be distributed via 600 ‘goodie bags’.
If it was up to me, though it still is, I would rather not bog the RA blog with RWP. But more and more entities are getting involved actively, on top of the unexpected magnitude it has grown in to, I will keep everyone updated.
This weekend, is UKEC‘s Second Malaysian Student Leaders Summit. It boasts 22 speakers. Of that, the ones I am interested in are
- Karim Raslan, Founder, Karim Raslan Associates
- YB Senator Dato’ Zaid Ibrahim, Minister in the PM’s Dept. – Law and Judicial Reform
- Royal Professor Ungku Abdul Aziz bin Ungku Abdul Hamid, former VC of Universiti Malaya
*MSLS on Facebook.
Sunday 27 July : Emailed the organisers asking if it was ok to insert 2 RWP Pay It Forward Bookmarks in each ‘goodie bag’.
Monday : One Alia Sidek replied, saying ok while informing that there are 600 goodie bags. It must be delivered to Nikko Hotel by Friday 6 pm.
Tuesday : RA calculated that we have almost exactly 1200 Bookmarks left, which does not only mean we have none left, but must print some more in view of being distributed for Bijou Bazaar. We placed an order with the suppliers for 2000 more.
Tuesday: Replied to convey our appreciation and thanks. While not avoiding from asking whether or not it is possible to screen the RWP video at the 2 day summit, at whatever point they are comfortable with. As what RA did at Farish Noor‘s book launch, an idea suggested by Ezra of ZI Publications. :)
Wednesday : Alia replies saying it’s cool and dandy.
Heart Series t-shirts at Bijou Bazaar Bangsar 2-3 August
July 29, 2008
Click here and here for the map. The map resembles better if you are coming with a helicopter or Nimbus2000. You should so get the Nimbus2008i.
Bijou Bazaar is primarily, a place where many independent traders who do not own a permanent retail shop, sell their goods. RandomAttire will be selling its t-shirts there this weekend.
Only 2 designs available. Only 180 pieces per design. Each piece numbered. Not pretentiously stamped on the t-shirt, but sincerely marked on the packaging. RM 47 and 20% of which will go to Eco Knights & PRIDE Foundation.
A friend of RA, Not Frumpy, hooked up the trade discussions with a new friend of RA, Campur Junk and also My Junk Your Treasure.
The latter two will be selling the t-shirts on our behalf. Look out for their booth. They sell mainly vintage stuff. Have a look at their websites.

RWP weekend with pictures
July 28, 2008
Typo: stay tuned*
I wrote a few days ago about the hectic weekend of campaining RWP. Below are pictures from all 3 events.
- Thursday : I received confirmation from the 3 hosts that I’ve been given a spot to talk about RWP at their events.
- Friday : Ezra (Farish’s publisher) calls and suggest to screen the RWP video at the Book Launch. He’ll sort out the projector if I can sort out the CD. Immediately made calls to 2 friends of RA when it comes to videos, Vini & Altimet. Got it sorted and met Farish & Ezra that night for the first time to pass them the CD.
- Saturday : Woke up and went to 4 hours of lecture. Rush off to print the RWP ‘poster’, then to Bangsar for Readings @ Seksan. At 4.50 I spoke, and at 4.54 I was on the road rushing to Taman Tun for the Book Launch.
- Sunday : Doppelganger at Marketplace. Brilliant. Love the concept of the open mic. Anything and everything.
.
Readings @ Seksan
- Poster by Shahril Nizam. I came across his book once. His illustrations are quite nice. Looks nothing like the poster.
- Dr. Shih Toong Siong. Old school. Said some pretty interesting things about his book.
- Robert Raymer. I had trouble following what he was reading, with the mic probs and the roadwork noises. His book has gotten good reviews though. He also teaches Creative Writing in Sarawak.
- Kathleen Choo of Poetry Underground. Catchy stuff she had. Sharon taking a picture of her.
- Sharon Bakar (the MC), introduced this guy as ‘the revolutionary’. Since I’m writing it, to be fair, I’ll quote from what she said in her blog, “This is Zain who is trying to rope us all in to take part in his wacky Read While Waiting project. I have a feeling we might just succumb to his charm!“
- The brownies that I did not see. Apparently, someone placed it there and it was from Amir Muhammad.
Thanks Sharon for letting me speak at again, another one of your events. AND for telling me to keep it short this time. I think it’s better that way too. :)
.
Book Launch : Di Balik Malaysia by Dr. Farish Noor
- After the intro by the MC, I opened by talking briefly about RWP before the video screening.
- The video screening. People watching. ( …. )
- Dr. Farish A. Noor.
- Zaid Ibrahim.
- Some peoples checking outs the RWP Pay It Forward Bookmarks.
- Some more peoples checking outs the RWP Pay It Forward Bookmarks.
I met a ton of people here and I thank them for the support. Besides the obvious, they were namely, Datin Suliana Shamsuddin, Jacqueline Ann Surin (MalaysiaVotes.com), Jason (Editor Off The Edge), Malik Imtiaz, Juana Jaafar (Peace Malaysia), Carol (UNHCR), Daphne Lee (Dram Projects), Michelle Gunaselan.
Hope all this name dropping will nudge some of you readers to actually be part of this project, and not just talk about it. Seriously.
.
Doppelganger at Marketplace
- Madman speaking again.
- Jaz, founder of the monthly Doppelganger and a superb host. On and off the stage.
- RWP Pay It Forward Bookmarks on the registration counter.
- Registration counter.
- Inside of Marketplace.
- What came off Madonna’s chest. Refurbished, of course. :)
.
Tomorrow (Monday) night, I might be speaking at a talk at KGPA. And in the midst of speaking with organisers of other events.
As Ghandi said, be the change you want to see in the world.
The change I want to see is to have more people reading while they wait.
And all this is what I’m doing to make that change.
It would be nice to see you do something. For anything.
Campaigning RWP
July 23, 2008
Update: All 3 (Sharon Bakar, Dr. Farish Noor, & Jasmine Low) just gave the green light for me to speak for a few minutes to their audience about RWP at their respective events ( Readings @ Seksan, Book Launch, Doppelganger).
Below is me standing at the exit of Pecha Kucha Night by British Council at The Annexe Central Market, distributing RWP Pay It Forward Bookmarks, the same day RA also did the Look Up More flashmob. I was ill the following day.

Today I registered for my Post Grad Diploma today. During the medical checkup, the conversation with my doctor got somewhat lively which ended up me passing her my card.
Within a second, she goes ‘you’re the RandomActs guy! We have a celebrity.’ I replied, ‘don’t be silly. I’m broke, exhausted and skinny and losing more weight as you can see.”
Inevitably, it led me to telling her about the Read while Waiting Project. (I already plan to have at least 10 Pay It Forward Bookmarks delivered to her office by this week.) It seems to be all I talk about. A collision of me wanting to, and having to.
I was telling Niki a few weeks ago about how ever since RWP was launched, I feel like
- I’m a politician
- Earth is my constituency
- 6 billion on the electoral roll
- Sole contestor
- With no election at all

I’ve spoken to an audience about RWP and/or distributed its Pay It Forward Bookmarks at events I am affiliated with, as well as events I have nothing to do with. I scout for events to go to and seek the permission of the organisers to be allowed a few minutes with the audience to promote the project.
28 June Rob! flashmob at KLue Urbanscapes at KLPac
2 July Random Acts of Poetry at Dram Projects
12 July Look Up More flashmob at KLCC
12 July Pecha Kucha Night Volume 4 by British Council at The Annexe Central Market
18 July That Green Thing by YAWA & M.A.D.ness at Dram Projects
20 July Dead flashmob for LAMAN 2008 at Lake Gardens
26 July Readings July (“Stickyish”) @ Seksan
26 July Book Launch for “Di Balik Malaysia: Dari Majapahit ke Putrajaya” by Dr. Farish A. Noor
27July Doppelganger Openmic & Readings at Marketplace
*Not confirmed yet. Subject to their permission. If you’ve witnessed me talking about it before, then don’t waste time coming for that. Come for their event instead. I trust all three would be brilliant, let alone interesting. Precisely why I’ve approached them.

Kunze Kwadoka – Oliver Mtukudzi*
*This song, makes a person happy. Too bad the link I found is not the full version.
Note: ofor the purpose of conveying this story, I find that there is no need to indicate the background, age, race or religion of The Lady. I consciously leave out whatever that fuels a subconscious prejudice.
There is nothing more fulfilling, then being a malicious virtuous person. You get to be good, and mean at the same time. Perhaps it is not being described aptly. But here’s what happened.
I parked and saw this lady on the other side, with her Naza Ria MPV. With her rear door open, she was bending over from outside with her body inside, cleaning the car. She was fishing for plastic cups, bottles and pieces of paper. Stuff like that. Nearby, I saw a 10% full 500ml Coca-cola bottle and an orange plastic bag. I’m not sure if she is a relative to those two objects.
She found a disposable plastic container (palm size) and flicks it out of her car without looking. Clearly, that was her way of disposing the disposable. I immediately went,
ZNG!
From her dressing, one could tell that she’s not with the In Crowd. But even if you’re not, you must be aware of this pretentious going green fab clouding our self rightous lives. Embrace the fab, at least.
So I pick up the plasticontainer, and say ‘excuse me‘ with a wide, kind, and I wanna slap your face smile. She turns around shocked, unexpected to see someone behind her.
You dropped this.
When I left, her car was gone. And so was the plastic bag and Coca-cola bottle.

If you are visiting this website today, because you received the RWP bookmark, then you have made RA and it’s efforts happy. And a step closer to making RWP a success.
Read the main posting on RWP, that explains the whole project, here.
Join RWP on Facebook.
*If you really support and believe in this project, then take those bookmarks, pass it to someone you know. Leave it on your colleagues desk, in your classmates pencil box or next to your relative’s jamban. Whatever. As long as it gets the message around and delivered. Baby steps.
*If you want some more bookmarks/cards, let us know. We’ll meet up and pass it to you. We distributed more than 750 at KLue Urbanscapes and will be printing more.
One of the main basis of RWP is that it carries the Pay It Forward approach. So what we have done is that to make bookmarks that look like this.
We ordered 1000 of it.
And decided that we should distributed in batches of 3 so that the recipient can share it to more than 1 person.
Last night it arrived at my house and I sat down alone for almost 4 full hours, wrapping 999 RWP bookmarks with 333 black rubber bands.
Multiplies of 3 will get you 333 batches with one extra odd card out. The blue dot on the W, is that extra 1.
Because I’m just that gatal, I decided to use more rubber bands to put everything together.
The quote above, was an sms from someone who knows me only too well. My first time being told so. Something I didn’t notice for myself. Something I needed to hear for myself.
Again, if you are visiting this website today, because you received the RWP bookmark, then you have made RA and it’s efforts happy. And a step closer to making RWP a success.
Thank you. :)
Flashmob invite by the malaysian flower show 20 July
July 19, 2008
*Flashmob or not, I reckon this is going to be one wicked flower show. :)
LAMAN 2008 aka The (Biggest) Flower Show in Malaysia asked RA to come & do a flashmob esque stunt at their event.
- Free Shuttle Service from KL Sentral.
- Bus Rapid KL B115
- KTM Commuter/Putra LRT
- KL Hop-On-Hop-Off Double Decker Tour Bus Services
- Group Drop-Off/ Pick-up Information for Tour Operators/ Coach Drivers
- Car
- Magic Broomstick
We agreed to come in as Theme Partners and you are welcome to come and participate.
6pm Sunday 20 July at Lake Gardens.
To Participate, email RandomActs [at] RandomAlphabets [dot] Com and we’ll inform you of the detailed arrangements. You can also join this event on Facebook.
Wear white. For The RA Team, they will be wearing this t-shirt.
The flashmob esque stunt is fairly simple. We will go to a certain location at the event, and we will lay down on the ground and pretend to be dead for a few minutes. It will serve as a symbolic act to the crowd there that this is what happens to the environment if it is not taken care of.
The message of this bizarre act (which will hopefully cause an impact to open peoples eyes,) will be announced on the PA system by the Organisers themselves. So that the crowd observing us, will know what is going on and properly understand the message.
This will probably be RandomActs’s last project before we take a break until late August for RWP. We thank the LAMAN Organisers (namely Liyana Ferdaus) for inviting us to be part of this event.
